Working On More WIP's

As we are packing, I have been gathering up any former project/UFO I come across to make sure I have all of them together when we move and unpack.  In the meantime, I have been trying to work on the project boxes a little bit each day.  Some days I am more motivated than others and I get lost in the process of moving forward with a project.  This past week, was one of those weeks where I got more done than seems humanly possible!
Holiday Happenings Quilt

Anita's Arrowhead blocks from Craftsy class

Faster Fourteen Quilt top
As Far as the quilt tops go, those are being kept in their filmsy state until after we move and I am able to obtain more batting.  My goal has been to put in atleast 15-30 minutes a day on various projects.  I have been using the Finish-a-long to help me focus, maybe stay committed to getting more completed projects.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

And So It Begins!

It is that time of year where the streets are filled with cars off to do their Black Friday shopping, it is a big city afterall.  Instead of rushing off to the sales, I am planning to hit Bonnie Hunter's Grand Illusion Mystery Quilt at a run this year!  I WILL GET IT DONE!  Every Friday there will be a clue, every Monday there will be a link up party.  I have taken part two other years and those quilts are not done. However, I do have the Christmas On Easy Street spray basted, it just needs some top stitching and binding!  My hope is that I will be able to work that in before the end of the mystery.  How about you?  Have you checked it out yet?  Just take a  little peek HERE, if you haven't experienced one of Bonnie's Mysteries before you are in for a treat as the community is absolutely wonderful!

What's In Progress Wednesday?

It's Getting Easier Street...
So I told you a few months back that I went to the local Quilt Shop to pick up the Easy Angle ruler to work on Bonnie Hunter's Easy Street mystery Quilt.  Well, what I ended up buying was the Easy Angle 2 ruler which the shop person assured me was the two rulers combined...let me tell you, they are not.  Since this was my first experience in making flying geese this way, it was not instinctive on how to make the flaps.  Looking back on other projects I had realized that I had incorporated flying geese in other projects, but just didn't know it!  Most patterns have you make it with one rectangle and two small squares with the pencil line on the back.  Needless to say I am feeling like an expert after this mystery quilt!!  I had this idea of just completing half of the required blocks but I wasn't paying attention and ended up cutting and sewing the total amount of flying geese...

As You can see the colors I chose to do at first was neutrals with a cream background, with highlights of taupe and several brown fabrics in place of the purple she chose.  It may come as a surprise, but I have been waiting to check out each step until the mystery quilt calls for it.  I have glanced at finished quilts, but the picture is in no way solidified in my mind so I am not quite sure how this quilt will turn out.

I am going to get this quilt completed; hopefully soon because I have 1 month until Bonnie Hunter releases her new mystery quilt for this year (Check it out HERE).  My Hope is that this year I can follow along and keep up...I have already picked out some fabrics, though I am substituting teal/turquoise for the green she is calling for because I need all the greens I can get my hands on for a surprise quilt I have been making for a friend.

"Stuck in the Middle With You..."

Its in the middle of the night when only Batman and I are awake.

Yet another night I cannot sleep.  I try, but my tossing and turning only wakes my husband up.  So I am out here in the living room trying to pass the time until I can make my body summit to a tiredness I will not feel until tomorrow afternoon when I try desperately to stay awake to be tired enough for sleep at night.  This has been the cycle all week....

Tonight, after Miss Z was down to bed, I had this grand idea to pull out one of the quilts I need to top stitch with the hope that tonight it would be completed. This was going to be the proof that I did not completely waste this week (besides housework and babycare I meant).  The last meandering stitched completed itself mere moments before my husband got home from Choir practice bearing a perfectly fresh hot McDonald's Apple Pie.  My eyes closed in bliss over the first little bit and as those deliciously happy eyes opened it was to look upon the mess I had made of my quilt.  The rich, sugary apple bits were like lead in my stomach as I saw an evening's work triple towards the future.  Resigned I set off towards my bedroom and the seam ripper crackling in my head with delight as it once more became a  tool to torture me.

Vlad the Seam Ripper
On a happier note, a package came for me in the mail today bearing this lovely magazine!  I have decided that I should be more modern in my quilting, plus I want to participate in the Retro Rubies QAL @PileoFabric.  Well except in true Shanna fashion I am going with Blues and so it will be more of a Sapphire thing.  My first run at it will be with some scraps from my over-flowing scrap collection, mostly likely...

I already see several of the other projects that I will probably whip out tomorrow as I am sincerely depressed over my mutilating my Red-Eye Quilt when attempting to sew while tired.  Its bad people, its almost like drunk-quilting, which is why I cannot bring myself to share a complete full-monty of the disaster!  Hopefully you will understand.

Now back to the book/magazine...

My only real criticism right now is that I wish (for what I paid for it) that the pages were a bit stronger.  With Miss Z eager to "decorate" with her crayons, this book is going to be put far above even my head, so high that I need a step stool to reach it.  You may think that I am over-reacting, but my little darling dragged a small step-stool across the living room carpet, climbed it, found her mommy's secret stash of Walker's Butter Shortbread cookies in a closed pyrex container (on the computer desk tucked all the way to the back), opened said container, grabbed two cookies, dragged the small stool back across the livingroom to the comfy chair, climbed up and settled in to snack!!!!  My fifteen month old is smarter than me, so I am not taking chances with the precious magazine.  Well also in my defense, just in case you think I am exaggerating, she has already absconded with my baby knits book and has almost colored on every page and that book was hidden in my bedroom closet!  What I can't figure out is where she is hiding the crayons.  I mean I have looked, checked her person, but then suddenly she will appear with one out of nowhere.

Again I digress...
I am really excited about doing my first true curved piecing, but I am praying it doesn't turned cursed too.  Have you checked it out yet?  well, you should, Alyssa's super-talented.  She is the one that is teaching/hosting that truly scrumptious Skill builder block series that I have pinned up there on the right-hand side.  I keep thinking I am going to have enough time to finish the BOM's I already have on my plate, so I haven't taken the time to do more than long after the blocks on the flickr pages...someday...

Well, I am back to bed to try and see if I can make myself sleep...I will try counting fabrics, maybe if I focus long enough on that sleep and sneak up on me.  Thanks again for listening to a midnight muttering!

Whatcha Doing?

I am trying to get projects finished each quarter as part of a competition as well as to keep me going, but I am going to stop feeling so neurotic about it...maybe.  I will post my Mater list at the beginning of a quarter, the mid-way point, and at the end of one quarter, then put up a new list for the following quarter.  You see, I have hidden WIP projects that I don't know what they are, I just know they are there!  So I plan to sneak them onto my list every quarter, lol.

So instead of posting my massive list each week of unfinished (thorns in my flesh) projects, I am going to highlight a project that I have either just started or the one I am focusing on for the week.  In my mind I work from Wednesday to Wednesday with the hope of having the project completed the following Friday.

For this week I want to share my scattered Triangles project which I got the idea HERE and then saw another like it HERE.  I used 6" Charm squares of Sommersalt and a basic white on white Print I bought at Joann Fabric's on a scary Black Friday once.  You will probably see the swirling design once I get this baby into better light!

What's left to do:
I need to re-cut the end-cap triangles (they got misplaced), finish rearranging sections, sew everything together, add a border (possibly), backing to be assembled, quilt, add binding, and then enjoy!

I also also working on the quilts from HERE!

Really Random Thursday

As I have mentioned we have been sick the last couple weeks or so.  Mostly I think its due to allergies on both our parts--Spring is not something I really forward to here because it starts mid-February and I seem to be allergic to everything here in Texas!  But on a happier note I have been snapping some great pictures of Little Miss Z!

So here are "the Many feelings of Little Miss Z" collection!

Contentment:  I am sitting with my friends watching Elmo's World, "This is Better than a Nap!"
Happy: Mommy gave me a chocolate chip cookie, "I wonder how many more of these she has?"

Fear:  First time on a baby slide, "Am I still alive?"
Contemplation:  "Do I ever have to do that again Mommy?"
Sadness:  Daddy has to work late "Where Daddy?"

Excitement:  Mommy has Cheese for me! "Yes!!  You heard my tummy speak!"
Curiosity:  I don't like this spot after all.  "Mommy HELP!"
On that Last picture, she scared me to death!  I sat her down in the chair to have some Cheerios and milk (in the bottle), which she does almost every morning and this day she got a little curious!  The funny part is that I was a couple feet away folding laundry; I didn't even hear her move until she screamed!  She gets buckled in to her baby chair from that moment onward.  The other funny thing she likes to do is shut her bedroom door and scream from the other side because she can't get out!  I have even pulled her toy box, which is heavier than she is, over in front of the door, but she just pushes it out of the way...

Meanwhile on the living room floor once she is asleep...
Let there be batting!
I told you that I found some batting, well it turned out that it was for a King-sized bed.  I honestly cannot remember when I bought this little roll of batting, but I was happier than Miss Z with some cheese I will tell you, when I found it in my storage closet in a box I was sorting!  I can pretty much only give 2 inches on each side of the tops to be able to use this batting for all four tops.  I haven't really gone beyond matching the tops with some batting; I still need to press the tops and the backings that I have prepared.  The Time Warp Quilt (Upper Right) doesn't yet have its backing assembled and ironically, its the only one of the four that I have the binding figured out!  I just cannot make up my mind for the binding on the other three or what colored thread to use to FMQ Stitch these pieces.

So far my husband has suggested yellow for the Red Eye Quilt (lower right) and I am leaning towards White thread for Time Warp and Black thread for 4-patches & Squares (lower left) and I have no idea for Zig Zag (upper Left).  What do you think?  Opinions are welcomed!  Well, I don't expect to have anything completed to share with you tomorrow, but my goal is to get these completed by the end of the month along with that Wonky Christmas Advent Calendar that has been on my list for 100 years (sure feels like it)!

A delay...

Greetings!  It is late now in the night and I was expecting to be finishing up the 2nd half of my post from Tuesday, but it is not to be ready yet.  I started off my day distracted by another project and then my Darling Girl needed some extra cuddle time today, by the time I turned my eye to finishing this project, it was really too late to have a post ready by the morning.  Baby Girl and I laughed together and she hugged me tightly as I cried a little watching an episode of Downton Abbey with her.  Oh she has no idea why I was sorrowful, but I can see she already has the sweetest heart.

I will probably have everything squared away later today (as it is about 12:45am) as I am truly excited to share the finished Quilt top with you.  And then on Friday I shall have a  few more items to share with you!  It feels like an accomplishment to get the projects to the point where I have the top, backing and binding ready to go.  That is my new goal--Once the top is completed to prepare the backing and binding next!  I am astonished just how much fabric is being used right from my own stash!  I have been making a list of the fabric I need to purchase, and then I try my hardest to make something work that I already own.  It has been liberating in a way, but eventually there is some yardage I need to purchase, especially some solids as I am sorely lacking in them.

Well as usual I digress...
Goodnight to all, and I hope I shall be back later today with another post!

UFO/WIP 8

So we are at the mid-way point for the first quarter and I am getting excited about the number of finishes on my list!  I made strong in roads to my WIP/UFO List last month but no complete finishes. Now we are well into February and I have 2 pieced tops (1 have backing & 0 have binding prepared). Next I tackled some clothing items as I wait to buy batting to finish off those quilts, 2 clothing projects were completed off my list. Now we are getting into some of the trouble areas on my list.  Either conceptually or some other issue it seems.  I continue to use the Easy Street Mystery Quilt as my "Leaders/ Enders" project in between and around other projects which makes it feel less daunting.

I promise a better Picture next time!
Over the next couple of weeks I will be focusing on my February Scrap Challenge Project which I have been quietly working on in the background.  I don't know what to call it yet except "Scrappy Paperclip" which is based off the Paperclip Quilt I made August 2011 [see Post].  It is slow going because I have to work on it in the evenings when Miss Z is completely asleep so I plan take pictures during the process for a Tutorial.  I actually still get requests for a tutorial for this one, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to make one and complete my challenge at the same time.  I am almost finished with my January Challenge Project and its Tutorial!!

On the Friday Night Sew-in on Thursday I finally sat down and took the time to get the 4 patch & Squares Quilt blocks trimmed and ready to sew together!  This Project is really getting exciting because the colors have just turned out super so far.  Take a look:

Still In Process:
Christmas Advent Calendar:  I have an idea...besides throwing out the window of a moving vehicle...I am just going to use another thread that purposely doesn't match the first thread.  I have to think more about this before committing.  I really, really don't want to rip out this thread for the 2nd time.
Dusty Rose Quilt:   I have figured out a new pattern for this quilt; currently in 4-patch and 2-patch segments, needs some love.
Dot Explosion Quilt:  This needs some reworking in concept, I almost have this one figured out.
Easy Street Mystery Quilt:  all the 4-patch blocks & Flying Geese are assembled (I am making half the blocks required for a smaller quilt ), I am currently using this as my Leaders & Enders project in between and around other projects (See Quiltville blog).
February's Scrap Challenge Project:  Partly pieced, My Focus this week
Fish Quilt:  Frustrating and hated pattern but I am trying to complete anyways.
I'll Fly Away Quilt:  No Progress yet.  I plan to use this one as my Leader/Enders project after the Easy Street Quilt.
March's Scrap Challenge Project:  Project kit ready to go with fabric cut from chosen pattern
Martinique Strip Quilt:  Need to assemble more strips, some are sewn into two strip blocks
Party Dress:  Close to a finish! [AKA Ziona's Birthday Dress]
Poppy Wall Hanging:  No progress for a while
Rainbow Block Quilt:    I have made this my orphan rainbow block quilt
Squares & Patches Quilt:  Squares are trimmed up ready to assemble!
Summersault Patch Quilt:  Need to assemble more strips, some are sewn into two strip blocks

Limbo-landed Items:
Chain Quilt:  Topis complete, back & bindings in process
Red Eye Quilt:  Top & backing complete, bindings are in process [POST]

New Items not on First Quarter List:
Birthday Bibs:  Started, post to come this week
Cousin #2's Dress:  Paused, making some changes.
Scrappy Hearts Wall Hanging:  mini-hearts compete, assembly required.
Completed Items:
Four Squares Weekend Quilt:  Complete.  [See POST]
Playdate Dress:  Complete.  [See POST]
Two + Two Blouse:  Complete.  [See POST]

Completed Items not on First Quarter List:
Coming Soon

Now that we are back from a nice family luncheon  I am off for a quick nap, but tomorrow I shall get going again!

WIPs & Friday Night Sew-In plans

Last Friday I pulled out those purple UFO clothing items to fiddle with and to take new pictures; they were going to be my focus for the early part of this week, but it just didn't happen.  I have been struggling to get this white part laying down perfectly and pinned, my hands just are not cooperating with me here.  With the temperatures already getting warm here (70's-80's), my hands are starting to swell again which turns my fingers into sausages!  I am not afraid to admit I am failing on getting this set in.  Thankfully a Friend came over on Saturday to help me get it set in place and I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I was for that!  Sunday my Husband drove me over to Jo-Ann's to buy some buttons and a zipper.  He has requested that the next dress I make have a zipper as he is in charge of Sunday morning dressing of Miss Z and she is a bit wiggly!

Dress sleeve cuffs
Now much hasn't been worked on the dress as other things have come up so...mainly house-cleaning.

These are the projects that I plan to work on Thursday for the Friday-Night Sew-in.  I cannot participate exactly on Friday night as family is coming in town for the Birthday party on Saturday.  Hopefully Everyone is okay with me participating a day early this month!
Playdate dress:  Adding the Yoke is giving me fits still

Two Plus Two Blouse:  Sleeves have been inserted, everything else still needs to be done.

These are the other 3 projects I am focusing on tomorrow night:

1.  Miss Z's Birthday dress:  I accidentally stripped out the gathering threads while working on this project, tossed it under my work table and promptly forgot about it.

2.   Birthday Bibs:   Someone has contacted me to commission a couple special birthday bibs for their Grand-daughter's first birthday, I will tackle this project if I have time.  I will probably make one for Miss Z while I am at it!

3.  Finish up the HST Quilt:  It is my Scrap Challenge Project for January and I almost have the top completed.  I really want to finishing making the Tutorial for it as well, but that might not all happen in one night!

UFO/WIP 6

I am still so happy that I made the link-up party for the first quarter, but now its time for an update on my list!  I made strong in roads to my WIP/UFO List in the month of January.  I Have 2 pieced tops (1 has backing complete & neither have binding prepared). Next I tackled some clothing items as I wait to buy batting to finish off those quilts, no clothing projects were actually completed off my list though. Nothing is counted unless it is completely finished though so I better get working!!

Still In Process:
Christmas Advent Calendar:  Rip out all the stitching again, I ran out of thread on accident can purchase exact color. [enter in head banging against wall picture here, lol]  I wish I could steal the batting!
City Weekend Project:  Working on ripping stitches out, need to pick out joining/sashing fabric.  This is now going to be one quilt--Writing a post about it this week

Fish Quilt:  Frustrating and hated pattern but I am trying to complete anyways.
HST Scrap Project:  Fabric Trimmed, squares set ready to sew

I'll Fly Away Quilt:  Pieces cut but this one is a long time project.  Since I am planning for this to fit our bed there with be many, many flying geese that needs to be made; I am guessing this one will take 3 months in among all the other projects.
