What is a world without color? There is just something about a certain pop of color that elevates an item. I wasn't always interested in using solid fabrics, but the longer I experience the world of quilting the more I appreciate the power of simplicity. This bare wall was screaming out for adornment and I headed it's pleas with A Rainbow Trip Around The World wall hanging. The pattern exploded across my flickr stream last year, but laid dormant in the back of my brain until this challenge was put before me. You can find the pattern HERE by Bonnie Hunter.
A Rainbow Trip Around The World was quilted with an organic swirl pattern and measures 36" X 36." All of the fabric for the top was purchased 3 years ago for a Kona Amish Churn Block Swap, which I was not able to participate in, so I was not able to obtain the same matching black fabric in time for this post so it is presented without binding. A Beautiful rainbow Batik I bought when I was a mere 18 years old, was used for the backing which also does not fall under the Kona Solids description so I wasn't quite sure if I should share it, so please come back to view the backing on Thursday when I should have binding attached as well. I am slightly obsessed with rainbows so this wall hanging is selfishly all MINE! [edited 01/18/2014: The finished quilt can be view HERE]
When I had all of the Kona solids in my stash laid out upon my bed, I saw my sweet daughter clutch a Bright Cherry Red that she took a certain liking to; then I had to make something for Miss Z! The pattern comes from MADE's Fiesta Skirt Pattern. I made this one for valentine's Day, though I may go back to make a another skirt specifically for Cinco De Mayo, which is big here in Dallas. I added a little extra room in the waist for growth and I chose to make the skirt width 4 X her waist for extra twirl. I have a petticoat in the works to make it extra full underneath.
Every girl needs a simple Navy skirt in her wardrobe I think; for Miss Z, I added the little lace on the bottom for a sweet touch. I made this simple skirt pattern up, the skirt is 2 X her waist and the skirt length goes to her mid-calf. You will be seeing more garment items for my marvelous daughter over this next quarter as she is transferring to size 4T before she is even Two years old!! I will be sprinting to catch up, let alone get a bit ahead of her growth spurts!
Thank you so much for joining me today, please visit the others posting for this day of the Hop!

Shanna

ReplyDeleteWow! That red skirt brings back memories. As a child, every year our school put on a folk dance festival and every class performed a dance. Along with that we wore appropriate skirts, just like the one on your post. I think the boys wore a colorful tie. My sister just put on CD movies of us dancing way back then and your post reminded me of those days. Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteI love that colorful trip around the world. It is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! I think the solids really bring out the pattern and keeps it from getting too busy.
ReplyDeleteWow. That wall LOVES your quilt. It's perfect for that spot. You did a beautiful job on it as well. I too, have viewed that same quilt pattern and one day very much want to attempt it myself. The skirts are so pretty too with those bright colors. I can't believe your daughter is already needing a size 4T. Wow. One of our Granddaughters lives here with her parents currently and she will be 2 yrs old just before Valentine's Day next month. She's barely into size 2T because she's such a petite little thing. Your daughter must be growing fast and will be a basketball player if she's that tall to need a 4T skirt already. Or maybe she'll be a super model when she's grown.
ReplyDeleteI don't blame you for keeping this one all for yourself. Mixing a solid black with colors creates such a striking quilt!
ReplyDeleteLove the black! And the skirts are adorable!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the trip around the world! Great composition!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty quilt and adorable skirts!!! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt - very clever photography!!! The entire quilt, piecing and quilting is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, love the use of black, makes those colors pop.
ReplyDeleteShanna, it's fabulous! I'm always a fan of the solids paired with black - they just pop so beautifully. And it's perfect for that spot. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteAdorable skirts and the quilt is awesome! It's nice to just let the color speak for itself sometimes, and the quilt speaks well.
ReplyDeleteWow! What an awesome job of piecing. If I did the calculations correctly, the squares finish at 1.5". The pieces meet so nicely at the intersections. That has to be the result of accurate cutting and piecing. And as quilters know it is more difficult with smaller pieces - there is less fudge room with smaller pieces. Congratulations on a beautiful quilt! The skirts you made for Miss Z are adorable. I had to laugh and laugh at story. It is adorable how children gravitate toward certain fabrics. When my children (now adults) were young, they were small. They were the smallest children in the nursery other than the preemies. They always seemed to wear the same size clothes as their age. And my friends' children would be in much larger sizes. Children just grow and develop at different rates - they are just individuals. They are still both opinionated. Thanks for sharing your great projects and I am anxious to see the bound quilt. Thanks for participating in the hop and bringing joy to many.
ReplyDeleteWow, the quilt is gorgeous. Great job. Glad I stopped by.
ReplyDeleteI love your trip around the world.
